Thank you Dr. Bruce for your prompt response. I just now figured out how to see your response. I hope you have time for this. Here are the events that have happened. Family trip to Wyoming. Daisy got sick with diarrhea but no vomiting . Went to vet in Cody, WY. Vet put Daisy on Science Diet I/D and antibiotics. No diagnosis (I figured she was car sick or altitude sick). Daisy got better. We came home. She was still on Science Diet I/D. Daisy had an eye infection. I took her to our vet. Our vet thought that her eye infection might be due to a grain allergy so she switched her to Science Diet Ideal Balance Grain free. Daisy did not tolerate this very well but I gave it a shot. This was a bad decision on my part. She threw up even more and lost 1 pound in 1 week. I took her to the vet and this is when they performed the barium tests and found nothing. A week before she threw up and I took her in for an x-ray (I had a dog before that ate everything so I wanted to make sure that this was not the case with Daisy.) I should have put Daisy back on BB Homestyle Recipe Small Breed like I put her on when I first got her. I have finally switched Daisy back to the BB but she is still throwing up. Her vomiting MAY be because she has switched different foods in a short period of time. BUT at this point, I don't know what to do. I did read a response that hopeleigh put her dogs on BB Wilderness holistic grain free chicken recipe and her dogs quit throwing up. Daisy seems normal except for the vomiting. This morning I fed her boiled potato and cooked chicken from a can. I rinsed the chicken though. I JUST got a call from a friend that gives her dog 10 mg of famotidine. My plan now is to have Daisy on a bland diet for about a week. If she does OK, I will SLOWLY switch her to BB Wilderness grain free. If she still throws up after that, should I consider giving her a famotidine tablet daily? My friend's dog is a standard poodle and she gets 10 mg 1x day. Would the dosage for Daisy be 5 mg 1x day? Daisy weighs ~17 pounds. Thank you for your time and help. Sincerely, Pam
Thank you for your time and your prompt responses. I've always had big dogs and they were pretty hardy so I am nervous with having a little dog that throws up so much (not a lot of weight to loose). Our vet here tested her for pancreatitis. It was negative. Yay! I will keep her on a bland diet for a week. I feed her peeled boiled potato and chicken. Potato and chicken seems monotonous. What else can I feed her during this time? And should I feed her 1/3 cup of food 3xday? You will be getting very good marks from me. I am very satisfied. BTW - What is your opinion on Science Diet? I think it sucks and so does everybody I've talked to about their product (vet tech friends and dog lovers). Sincerely, Pam
Hi Dr. Bruce!........You are so right about the diet debate with dog food. I wish horse meat would come back in vogue though cause my family had a terrier when I was growing up that lived to be 19 years old. He ate nothing but Ken-L Ration. No supplements or anything else. I guess you could say that Duke was as healthy as a horse. ................I went on-line and found that the only side effect of Denosyl is vomiting. This maybe why Daisy keeps vomiting. Our vet put her on 225 mg of Denosyl. I went to the Denosyl website and found out that this is too much for her although I do not know how how her liver enzymes are. I will call my vet tomorrow and ask about this so I can do further research on my own. This is the website that I found out about the vomiting: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100318195902AApaOFU and this is the Denosyl website: http://ww3.nutramaxlabs.com/Brochures/Denosyl%20Brochure.pdf The Nutramax Lab folks warn against breaking the pills in half but I have decided to go with 1/2 dosage anyway for these 2 reasons: 1) In some of her earlier vomit, I found a pill that way still intact after it had been in her stomach all day. The outside coating had not dissolved. This is unacceptable as the medicine did not get to her. 2) Even though the strength of Denosyl will be dimished by breaking the pill in half, at least she will get some benefit from it...........I will feed her the homemade diet you recommended..........I have no more questions. Thank you very much for all your time and all you do. God Bless You! I will check-out now. Pam
